Myanmar was still picking up the pieces after the terrible floods of late 2024 when this new tragedy hit in 2025, making an already desperate situation even worse. Last year's monsoon season hit central and southern Myanmar particularly hard, with UN reports showing around 100,000 people affected across five states. The floodwaters swept away homes, ruined drinking water, and destroyed farmland in communities already caught in the crossfire of armed conflict following the 2021 military coup. Many families had no choice but to leave everything behind and head to overcrowded evacuation centers, where aid workers struggled to reach them due to military checkpoints and fighting. Now, with this latest disaster, people who were already stretched to their breaking point have been pushed even further, with little left to help them bounce back.
